BBA Meeting: The Brownsville Business Association will hold its meeting on Tuesday, April 20, 5:30 p.m., in the Delta Room behind Backyard Barbecue, 703 East Main St. All members are encouraged to attend. Toddler Time at the Library: Toddler time at the Elma Ross Public Library will be held Monday, April 5 & 19 at 11 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddlers and enjoy lots of stories, songs, puppets, crafts and a snack. Lunch 'N Learn at the Library: Lunch and Learn is planned for Wednesday, April 28, at noon at the Elma Ross Public Library. Each month promises an interesting speaker and an opportunity to learn something new. Remember to bring your lunch and the library will provide your drink and dessert. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4838: Monthly meeting of veterans who have fought in foreign wars to conduct business and plan for future events that involve veterans or veteran's programs. Good Friday Services: First Presbyterian Church, 109 West College St., will host its annual Good Friday Service beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, April 10. The service will include special music by the Chancel Choir and reading from the Passion Story of Christ. Everyone is welcome; a nursery is provided. Holy Week Services: The Haywood/Brownsville Ministerial Alliance will once again host Holy Week Services beginning Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2. Services begin at 12 noon followed by a light lunch ($5) at 12:30. Locations for each days service are noted on the calendar. This year's theme is "Last Words are Lasting Words." Everyone is welcome. Seder Supper: The Passover Seder is a time for remembering and retelling the story of how God redeemed the Jewish nation from enslavement in Egypt. It offers a time to reflect on and remember and to develop a clearer understanding of communion. First Presbyterian Church, 109 West College, invites you to attend this special service Thursday, April 1, at 6 p.m. A meal is served during this event and advanced registration is appreciated. Boston Butt Fundraiser: The Brownsville Fire Department will be selling Hickory Smoked Boston Butts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. Presale orders will be taken through April 4 and butts can be picked up on the morning of April 10 at Firs Station #3. Cost is $25 and all proceeds go to the Americna Cancer Society. Sign up at any of the three BRownsville Fire Departments. It's time to tell cancer to BUTT OUT!!! Spring Tour of Homes: A Spring Tour of Homes is planned for Sunday, April 11, from 2-5 p.m. Several homes, both historic and more modern-day will be included. Proceeds from the tour will benefit Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. List of homes on the tour include: Kathleen & Dan Walker-606 West College, Helen & Bill Stark-727 West Main Street, Sandra & Fred Silverstein-2 Woodscreek, Michael Banks-924 Creekwood, Pam & Tommy Russell-130 Rooks Drive, and Alicia & Andrew Russell-911 Forrest Street. Swing into Spring: A Golf Scramble benefiting Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center will be held on Monday, April 26 at the Jackson National Golf Club. Individual players and teams are welcome. Haywood's Got Talent Auditions: Auditions will be held, for the May 8 presentation of Haywood's Got Talent, on Wednesday, April 7, from 1-6 p.m., at the BRownsville YMCA, 127 N. Grand Ave. Individuals and groups are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardiam. Singers and dancers may bring music (CD or MP3) or perform without music. Dress the part because auditions will be recorded. The contest is open to ages 12-25. Those chosen will perform at the Ann Marks Performing Arts Center on May 8 for prizes. Chamber Art Contest: Brownsville and Haywood County residents are invited to participate in an art contest depicting what the Chamber (and Brownsville-Haywood County) means to you. There will be a 1st ($150), 2nd ($75) and 3rd ($50) place winner and those winners artwork will be framed and displayed in the Chamber building. Sobriety Checkpoints: Sobriety checkpoints will be held Friday, April 30, beginning at 8 p.m., and continuing through Saturday, May 1, at 2 a.m. This is a joint effort between the Brownsville Police Department and the Haywood County Sheriff's Department. Officers will concentrate on Sobriety checkpoints and DUI saturations, but will also be looking for seatbelt use and proper child restraints. |
