BBA Meeting: The Brownsville Business Association will hold its meeting on Tuesday, August 17, 5:30 p.m., in the Delta Room behind Backyard Barbecue, 703 East Main St. This month members will tour the new Criminal Justice Center presently under construction. Those planning to attend the tour are asked to RSVP by Friday, August 13. All members are encouraged to attend. Everyone is invited. Toddler Time at the Library: Toddler time at the Elma Ross Public Library will be held Monday, August 2 & 16 at 11 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddlers and enjoy lots of stories, songs, puppets, crafts and a snack. Lunch 'N Learn at the Library: Lunch and Learn is planned for Wednesday, August 25, at noon at the Elma Ross Public Library. Each month promises an interesting speaker and an opportunity to learn something new. Remember to bring your lunch and the library will provide your drink and dessert. Classic Car Cruise In: Tennessee Trash will present Tennessee Trash-Bash Cruizin Saturday, August 21, at College Hill Center, from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided for up to two people per registered car. A Poker Run will begin at 1:30 p.m. and cash prizes will be awarded for the top two poker hands. An awards presentation will be at 2:30 p.m. Plenty of shade and grass, plus air conditioned building and restrooms. Registration fee is $12 per car. National Night Out: The community is invited to National Night Out Against Crime Tuesday, August 3, 6 p.m., at the East Side School Practice Field. Come join your neighbors or a night of community spirit. Stregthen your neighborhood and increase awareness of crime and drug prevention. There will be free food and games. Something fun for all ages. Forever Parents Class: Every third Monday Forever Parents Class is held at the Exchange Club-Carl Perkins Center from 4 - 8:00 p.m. In January of 2000, the State of TN passed a law requiring all divorcing parents and those petitioning for a change of custody to complete a four-hour seminar concerning parenting. According to the law the seminar shall educate parents concerning how to protect and enhance the child's emotional development and inform the parents regarding the legal process. The seminar shall also include a discussion of alternative dispute resolution, marriage counseling, the judicial process and common perpetrator attitudes and conduct involving domestic violence. The seminar shall be educational in nature and not designed for individual therapy. Minor children shall be excluded from attending these sessions. The group setting encouraging open discussion and questions and the leader will present tools and ideas about how to build a relationship with each other geared toward co-parenting. Parenting Classes: Parenting classes are offered every Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Exchange Club-Carl Perkins Center. These classes are in a ten week session. This program provides support and develops parenting skill in its participants. It promotes positive parenting and healthy discipline techniques. Haywood County WEOC: You are invited to attend the Haywood County Workforce Employer Outreach Committee Forum on Wednesday, August 4, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, 1009 East Main St. The meeting topic will be Tennessee Drug Free Workplace. Guest speaker will be Lance Wheaton, Program Coordinator - Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Lunch will be provided by Southwest TN EMC. Annual State of the School Celebration & Business Fair: Haywood County Schools is planning its second annual Business Fair to coincide with the annual State of the Schools Celebration. This day of in-service and celebration will be held on Wednesday, August 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the Haywood High School campus. The entire staff of the school system will be present, and the celebration is open to the public. Last year’s State of the Schools Celebration and Business Fair was a huge success. Businesses and other organizations are asked to set up booths in the hallways at Haywood High School highlighting their products and services to the community. Space is limited, so call and make your reservation today. The deadline to reserve a space will be July 30. Rotary Hamburger Lunch: On Election day, Thursday, August 5, the Brownsville Rotary Club will hold a hamburger lunch fundraiser event on the square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. $5 purchases a 6 oz. hamburger, chips, dessert, and drink. Proceeds go to Brownsville for Rotary educational projects, including: the purchase of books for the Dolly Parton Reading Railroad Imagination Library, a scholarship for a worthy Haywood High graduating senior, bicycle awards each grading term to worthy students at Haywood Elementary and Eastside Elementary and furnishing dictionaries to third graders. Annual Steak N' Burger Dinner: The Boys and Girls Club annual Steak N' Burger dinner will be held Thursday, August 19, at 6 p.m., at the Carver Gymnasium, 709 East Jefferson. Special guest speaker will be Dr. Will Jones, former pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Brownsville, and professor of Philosophy and Religion at university of Mississippi at Desoto. Tables are available for $400 and individual tickets are $25 each. Each table will consist of 6 guests and 2 children from the Boys and Girls Club. Breakfast for Babies: The March of Dimes annual fundraiser Breakfast for Babies will be held Thursday, August 12, 6-10 a.m., at the Hibachi Restaurant on Dupree. Everyone is invited to stop by for a great breakfast and the opportunity to be served by local "celebrity" waiters. You will also have the opportunity to meet this Haywood County's Ambassador Sarah Willis. She is the daughter of Lt. Chuck & Jennifer Willis. All tips and a portion of the breakfast proceeds will go to the March of Dimes. Park of Dreams Magazine Op: The Brownsville Haywood County Parks and Recreation Department has been chosen by Little Tykes Playground Company to be spotlighted in an upcoming magazine for the Park of Dreams project. All parents are encouraged to bring their children to the park on Sunday, August 15, from 1:30 - 3 p.m. A photographer will be on hand and we want lots of children playing that afternoon in the park. There will be refreshments available during this time. 27th Annual Circle of Hope Telethon: The 27th Annual Circle of Hope Telethon for the Prevention of Child Abuse will be held Sunday, August 15, at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson. It will be televised on Channel 7 and Haywood County will be spotlighted from 5-6 p.m. The local Haywood Company Choir will be appearing during this time, as well as local residents will be there answering phones and accepting pledges for Haywood County. If you have not made a pledge, please plan to call in during this time to show support for our local center. Special Olympics Celebration: A special ceremony will be held Friday, August 20, 4 p.m., on the courthouse lawn to celebrate our Special Olympics Basketball Team who have brought home the GOLD to Tennessee. Special recognitions and presentations will be made at this time. Please plan to attend and show your support for these special young men. Concert on the Porch: The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center presents the second in its series "Concert on the Porch" Saturday, August 21, 7 p.m., from the porch of the Sleepy John Estes home, 121 Sunny Hill Cove, behind McDonald's. This month's featured performer is 14 year old sensation Bailie Doughty McRae singing "Songs of the Heart and Soul: Contemporary Country to Classic Rock and Roll." McRae, who has Brownsville ties, has performed at the Hatchie Fall Fest on two ocassions. She has also performed at various venues across Alabama and Tennessee and is the winner of both the Eastwood Idol and PACT Youth Talent competitions. McRae is currently a freshman at Decatur High School, Decatur, Alabama, where she is also a member of the cheering squad. Appearing with McRae will be Tom Morgan. Morgan, a Memphis native and a personal friend of Elvis Presley, will perform a variety of songs including some Elvis tunes. Bring a yard chair and picnic and enjoy this free family concert. Chestnut Grove Cemetery Association Annual Meeting: Chestnut Grove Cemetery Association will host its annual meeting Saturday, August 21, at the Veranda Restaurant on West Main, at 11 a.m. Those interested in the continued upkeep and preservation of this cemetery are invited to attend. Holly Grove Annual Stew and BBQ: Holly Grove Baptist Church will host its annual Stew and BBQ Saturday, August 21, beginning at noon. County Commission Meeting: The Haywood County Commission will meet in a called session on Monday, August 23, 7 p.m., for the purpose of hearing the first reading of the proposed 2010-11 county budget. Also on the agenda is the first reading on a proposed meat packing plant. Open House at New Sleep Lab: Haywood Park Community Hospital invites the community to tour its new Sleep Lab Tuesday, August 24, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you have trouble sleeping or a snoring spouse keeps you up at night, this may be the answer.
