BBA Meeting: The Brownsville Business Association will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 18, 5:30 p.m., in the Delta Room behind Backyard Barbecue, 703 East Main St. Guest speaker will be Duane Lavery, president and CEO of HTL Advantage. Learn what influences the Mega Site will have on local businesses and how we can help prepare our community for these possibilitites. This is a free meeting and everyone is invited to attend. Toddler Time at the Library: Toddler time at the Elma Ross Public Library will be held Monday, May 3 & 17 at 11 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddlers and enjoy lots of stories, songs, puppets, crafts and a snack. Lunch 'N Learn at the Library: Lunch and Learn is planned for Wednesday, May 26, at noon at the Elma Ross Public Library. Each month promises an interesting speaker and an opportunity to learn something new. Remember to bring your lunch and the library will provide your drink and dessert. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4838: Monthly meeting of veterans who have fought in foreign wars to conduct business and plan for future events that involve veterans or veteran's programs. Haywood's Got Talent: An afternoon to showcase Brownsville's finest talent. Performers will compete for a grand prize package that includes an opportunity to perform at this year's Hatchie Fall Fest. This event is presented by I PROMise to Strive for a Bright Future! Herbie's Heroes Pageant: This pageant will benefit the Brownsville-Haywood County Humane Society and will be held Saturday, May 22 at the Ann Marks Performing Arts Center in Brownsville. The pageant will begin at 1 p.m. and is open to girls ages 0 months-21 years. This is the third annual pageant to benefit the Humane Society. The reigning Miss Tennessee and 2nd Runner-up to Miss America, Stefanie Wittler, will make a special appearance. Registration is $35 prepaid, $45 at the door and includes all side categories except Most Photogenic which is optional and an additional $10. Contestants who raise money for the Humane Society may be eligible to enter the pageant free and receive a trophy. Relay for Life: The annual Relay for Life event will be held Friday, May 14, at the Football field beginning at 5 p.m. The event will feature the Survivor Walk, Luminary Ceremony, live entertainment. Entertainment will include Haywood County's own Blair Simpson along with 70s and 80s entertainer Freddie Weller, David Smith - The Singing Firefighter, Shawn Williams, Christ Church Praise Band, Jeffory Vaulx Group, Jimmy Craig Dancers, Ricky McCory Band, The Tina Turner Review with little Michael Jackson, and La Nueba Vanda Corrol. Kentucky Derby Party: And they're off! Brush up on “Old Kentucky Home” and dig those spectacular hats out of the closet, because it’s Derby Day in Brownsville! We’re celebrating all things “horsey” while watching the most exciting two minutes in sports! Our hosts have planned a winning trifecta to ensure a thrilling and enjoyable afternoon at the races authentic Bluegrass delicacies; lots of action as you pick your horse; and of course, traditional mint juleps. Back to Calendar Park of Dreams Ribbon Cutting: The Park of Dreams will officially open at a Ribbon Cutting set for 10 a.m., Friday, May 7. The all-inclusive park is located at Volunteer Park. Everyone is invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting. Drug Awareness Event: The Tennessee National Guard will have their Drug Awareness Trailer at the W.O.W. building, on Boyd Avenue, from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, May 6. This will be open to the public to view and speak with members of the Tennessee National Guard Counter-Drug Unit. Neighborhood Watch Meeting: The Ward 2 Neighborhood Watch will meet Thursday, May 6, at 6 p.m., at the W.O.W. building on Boyd Avenue. The NAtional Guard will be on hand with their drug awareness trailer and Lt. Shawn Williams, of the Brownsville Police Department, will present a program on drug awareness. Supper will be provided following the meeting. Mother's Day Bake Sale: Habitat for Humanity have a Mother's Day Bake Sale on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., on the Wal-Mart parking lot. Candidate Forum: Brownsville Radio will sponsor a Candidate Forum Thursday, May 20, 6 p.m., at College Hill. This forum is open to the public and the public will be allowed to ask questions. It will also be aired live on Brownsville Radio, 95.3 FM. Social Networking Seminar: The Brownsville Business Association will sponsor a Social Networking Seminar on Saturday, May 15, from 9-12. Cost is $15 per person and limited seating is available. This seminar will teach businesses how to set-up social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and how to successfully market their businesses using these and other free internet tools. Ribbon Cutting Los Amigos Restaurant: Everyone is invited to the Ribbon Cutting of one of Brownsville’s newest businesses: Los Amigos Restaurant. Los Amigos is located at 1444 East Main. The Ribbon Cutting will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 12. Peace of Xcellence Pageant: Xcellence Inc. will host a pageant Saturday, May 15, at Dunbar Carver Gymnasium, 709 East Jefferson. Doors Open at 2:00 pm. Pageant begins at 3 p.m. Competition is open to girls ages: 6-18 yrs. All contestants will need to arrive no later than 2:15 p.m. Girls will be grouped according to grade. Queens will receive a very nice trophy and the opportunity to be showcased in other local area parades and appearances. SIDE CATEGORY WINNERS will receive a nice trophy. One winner per category and includes Best Dressed, Best Personality & Response to Impromptu Question regarding Peace and/or Excellence. All entrants will receive a participation award. Christian Concert: Boxful of Blessings Christian Concert will be held Saturday, May 29 at 6 p.m., at the Ann Marks Performing Arts Center. Admission is free. Friends Night at the Library: Friends Night at the Library will be Tuesday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at the Elma Ross Public Library. There will be a public forum for the Mayoral candidates, with moderator Judge Lyle Reid. All are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Journey for Control: Haywood Park Community Hospital will host a free diabetes class entitled "Journey for Control" Thursday, May 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m., in the hospital cafeteria. Hospital Wing Memorial Softball Tournament: The Haywood County EMS will sponsor a Memorial Softball Tournament to benefit the families and charities of those who lost their lives in the recent Wing helicopter crash. Healthcare workers and emergency agencies are especially encouraged to register your teams. No tournament teams please. Registration is $150 and the tournament will be held at West Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, Tenn. All teams need to be registered with fees paid by Saturday, May 15. Retirement Reception for Robert Mitchell: HCS peers, community members, family & friends are invited to wish Mr. Mitchell a blessed farewell Tuesday, May 25, from noon2 pm (come & go) at Haywood High Library. The retirement reception will honor Mr. Robert M. Mitchell for his 40 years of service as a teacher, career & tech director and principal. Memorial Day Ceremony: This year's Memorial Day Service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 31, on the lawn of the Haywood County Courthouse. The guest speaker will be General John Glad Castellaw. The program is jointly sponsored by the local VFW Post 4838, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy. The program is designed to show respect and appreciation for our "fallen heroes." Sobriety Checkpoints: Local authorities will be increasing enforcement efforts to insure the safety of the citizens of Brownsville and Haywood County during this Memorial Day weekend. Officers of the Brownsville Police Department and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department will be teaming up and joint enforcement activities will be conducted on Friday, May 28, at 8 pm and end Saturday, May 29, at 2 am. Activities will include Sobriety Checkpoints, and DUI Saturations. Officers will concentrate their enforcement efforts on removing impaired drivers from the roadways. However as non-compliance with the safety belt and child restraint laws place people in danger, these laws will be vigorously enforced as well. |
