Relay For Life Raises Over $81,000

Kathleen Walker, Community Representative for the American Cancer Society, described this year’s Relay for Life event as “simply fabulous.” Walker says people are still talking about the wonderful food, entertainment and activities.

Relay activities started on Thursday, June 7, at the Survivor’s Luncheon where Kym Clark, from WMC Channel 5 in Memphis, was the guest speaker. Kym brought the crowd to tears with the news that her mother-in-law was just diagnosed with cancer on the eve of the reception.

Walker reports that Haywood County had 40 teams working to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Each Relay team consists of a team captain and team members. The Relay committee is made up of about 35 people who work tirelessly all year long to support the teams and to bring them all together on the night of Relay.

The June 8 event has raised over $81,806 so far and money is still coming in. Walker added that it’s “not too late to donate to this year’s Relay for Life.”

Walker commended Carolyn Flagg, Relay Chairman, for a “fantastic job.”

At a wrap-up meeting Monday, June 25, Flagg announced that Insouth Bank raised the most money as a team, as well as a sponsor. "Hats off to them," says Flagg, "and thanks to Brownsville and Haywood County for making this year's Relay one of the best."

Plans are already underway for the 2008 Relay. If you are interesteed in helping or would like to form a team for next year's event, contact Carolyn Flagg at 731-772-0425 or Kathleen Walker at 731-512-5008.
