Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity and is the largest community fundraiser in the world. It is a unique event that offers everyone the opportunity in the fight against cancer.
Brownsville’s annual Relay for Life will be held Friday,
May 14, 5 p.m., at the L.Z. Hurley Football Field. The event will feature live
music, a Survivor Walk and Luminary ceremony. Food and games will be available
throughout the night at over 40 team booths that will be set up at the event.
Corporate sponsors will receive special recognition during
this year’s event and entertainment will be provided by local and regional
artists. Performing will be David Smith, the Singing Firefighter; Women of
Purpose; Christ Church Praise Band; Blair Simpson, Jeffrey Voss and Group;
Jimmy Craig Dancers; Shawn Williams; Ricky McCory Band; and the Tina Turner
Review along with Michael Jackson.
This year’s goal is $73,000, according to Carolyn Flagg.
Flagg, who started in 1999 with the Survivors Luncheon, has served as chairman
of the event for the last four years. Also serving as honorary chairpersons
this year are Margaret Ann Fletcher and Donald Lee. The Survivors Luncheon will
be held Thursday, May 13, 11:30 a.m., at First South Bank Community Center.
Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to
cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported
and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
