National Day of Prayer
Members of the community joined
the Haywood County Ministerial Alliance Thursday, May 4, 2006, for a National
Day of Prayer ceremony. Joining others from around the country, who took time
from their lunches and busy schedules to pray for the nation, governmental
leaders, churches, families and schools. The National Day of Prayer tradition
predates the founding of the United States of America when the Continental
Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer in 1775. In 1952,
Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was
amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
This year's theme was “America, Honor God.”
