Competitions have become a hallmark of the Hatchie
Fall Fest, especially when it comes to cooking. Haywood County cooks, whether
stirring up gumbo or baking pies are always anxious to show off their culinary
expertise. This year’s festival welcomes back two of our favorites, plus gives
us a taste of something new.
Gumbo Cooking Contest
According to
Webster’s dictionary, gumbo is a “rich thick soup usually thickened with okra.”
Well, get the okra ready. Sponsored by E. W. James and Sons Supermarket, this
year’s contest will take place at 2 p.m., Oct. 21, inside the Haywood County
courthouse. This spicy competition has become a tradition and is free and open
to everyone.
Be sure and bring enough gumbo to feed at least
three hungry judges and don’t forget to gussy up the dish a little to qualify
for the presentation award.
Pie/Cake
Baking Contest
Pie-baking is
always a festival favorite and this year Dr Sue McElrath, of All Care
Chiropractic Clinic and sponsor of the event, has added a new category -- Cake
Baking.
Haywood County is
known for having great cooks and this contest gives everyone an opportunity to
prove their baking skills. Both the pie baking and cake baking events will take
place inside the courthouse beginning at 10 a.m.
First, second and third place ribbons will be
awarded in each category with a presentation award presented, too.
Again, entry is free and open to everyone. For
complete rules and entry forms, visit online at www.allaboutbrownsville.net/hatchiefallfest.
Gumbo entry forms are also available at E. W. James on West Main St., or visit
All Care Chiropractic on South Wilson Ave., for pie or caking baking
applications.
