What is P.R.I.D.E.? Have you seen the blue signs around town? I can immediately think of many things to be proud of in Brownsville and Haywood County and I’m sure P.R.I.D.E. will be something to, well, take pride in. My curiosity is up and I look forward to learning what it’s all about. Aren’t you curious, too?

We are definitely proud of our local small businesses and know they struggle everyday to provide us with quality products at reasonable prices. To help out those existing businesses and those wanting to start a business, the chamber has put together a seminar called “Sources of Capital.” Advisors from several loan sources will be on hand Tuesday morning to answer questions and make you aware of the different avenue to get low-cost funding. Local business owners also need to know about the Brownsville Merchant and Restaurant Association (BMRA). Members of the BMRA share pitfalls and successes and are learning creative ways to promote their products and help each other in the process.

United Way has always been a source of pride for Haywood County. Your contributions help 22 local agencies provide much needed services. This year’s campaign is getting ready to kick-off and you’ll be hearing a lot more in the coming weeks.

And while we are still on the subject of pride, what about our roads? I think we do an excellent job of keeping the litter under control, but we probably could use a little help with the aesthetics. There is a public hearing Tuesday afternoon, downstairs at the chamber, where you can learn about TDOT grants for roadway beautification, particularly our interstate exits. After all, we want to make a good first impression.
