All About Brownsville

& Haywood County

July 16, 2009

Volume 5, Issue 26

The votes are in and, from those whom I’ve heard from, it seems you prefer to receive AAB on Thursday. So here we are. I hope, as many indicated, this will give you an opportunity to make more plans for weekend events.

The Ken-Ten Truck & Tractor Pull is back this weekend at the field beside Pictsweet on Anders/Hwy. 76 South. This year the proceeds will benefit Park of Dreams. Come on out and show your support and have a little fun, too.

Do you have a classic car? Or maybe you just like to look at them. Whichever the case, you’ll want to make plans for the Tennessee Trash – Bash Cruizin next Saturday, July 25. Organizers are expecting more than 150 cars to be at College Hill Center for this event. Learn more about the Cruizin.

Leadership Haywood County is still accepting applications for its Class of 2010. Learn more about the program and pick up an application at the Chamber office or print one here.

There’s still room to get in on that business fair at the school August 5. If you own a business or know someone who does, please pass along this info. It’s a perfect opportunity to showcase what Brownsville and Haywood County has to offer, plus it’s free. Here are more details and how to register.

And speaking of school. Check out www.haywoodschools.com for this year’s school calendar, dress code requirements and more. Don’t forget the August Sales Tax holiday is coming up August 1-3, too. Perfect time to buy those school supplies. More about the tax holiday. Remember while you are shopping for school supplies to pick up a few extras and contribute to the Bust the Bus event at Relay for Life on August 7.

The clean-up from those June storms have costs our government and utilities quite a bit, but you can't beat the service during severe weather. Our local workers waste no time to make sure we are not in the dark any longer than we have to be. I would hate to be the one who gets called out in the middle of the night, in the middle of a storm, and I really appreciate the dedication of our city, county and utility employees. And don't forget Emergency Management workers and volunteers. They all do an outstanding job. So I was especially pleased to hear that Governor Bredesen was able to secure some federal disaster relief money to help reimburse these entities for all their extra expenses.

Which brings up another point. What do you think about the proposed tax increase? Would you rather send grant money back and not make improvements in order to pass a balanced budget without a tax increase or are you willing to pay a little extra to see these projects through? I believe the 20 cent increase amounts to approximately $40 more per $100,000 assessed value of your property. Did I get that right? Go to the Blog and let’s hear your opinion.
