& Haywood County

June 17, 2010

Volume 6, Issue 23

Congratulations to Brownsville's new Mayor-Elect Jo Matherne. And also to Ward 2 Alderman Carolyn Flagg for her re-election and Thomas Averyheart for his victory and new position as Ward 4 Alderman.

I hope you will plan to attend a Retirement Reception in honor of retiring Mayor Webb Banks and Vice-Mayor Joe Taylor. It will be Tuesday, June 29, 4-6 p.m., at the First South Bank Community Room. They don't officially leave office until July 13, but it won't hurt to go ahead and honor them for their years of service and excellent leadership.

This is a big weekend for me. It will be the first concert at the Heritage Center and I'm so looking forward to it. I hope you will be able to join me there. It may be a little warm at first, but we'll have plenty of cold drinks available and there always seems to be a breeze on that side of the building.

I'm also excited about publishing the Center's first e-newsletter this week. If you haven't signed up yet, go to www.westtnheritage.com.

Sometimes Reading Railroad in Haywood County doesn't get enough credit for all the work they do to try and get every child in Haywood County under 5 years signed-up for this program. Over the next couple of month's you'll probably be seeing Dolly on TV a lot. Last week Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gave away its 25 millionth book to a four-year old boy from Birmingham, Alabama. To date our branch of Dolly's program, Reading Railroad of Haywood County, has given away 48,300 books to our county's children. I think that's pretty impressive. If you know anyone who has a child under 5 years of age, please make sure they know about this free program and how important it is for a child to be read to. For details and to join the program visit the Elma Ross Public Library on East Main St.
