& Haywood County May 27, 2010 Volume 6, Issue 20 |
|
Congratulations to the Class of 2010! I know you will
agree that we have exceptional students in Haywood County. Have you heard about the S.T.E.P. program? Southwest
Tennessee Educational Pathways (STEP) is a two-phase program designed to
change the educational culture of our region. Simply put it will depend on
the community to mentor our high school seniors and encourage them to
continue their education past high school. That’s the first phase. The second
phase will help provide the “last dollar” for any student who wants to attend
a community college or technical school for two years. Sandra Silverstein is
our local coordinator for this program and she is looking for mentors NOW to
begin working with students when school resumes in August. A training class
will be held in July, so if you are interested in helping these students and
are willing to commit a few hours a month to do this or just need more
information, please contact Sandra at 731-772-1763. The big benefit of this
program is that as we become a more educated community, our workforce
improves and we grow and become more prosperous. Don’t forget our annual Memorial Day program on the
courthouse lawn. This year’s speaker is General John Glad Castellaw. The
service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday. The March of Dimes Golf Tournament is always lots of fun
and I’m sure there is still time to sign up your team for the shotgun start
next Thursday, June 3, at 1 p.m. Contact Tara Joyner at 731-780-1328, or
Debra Jackson at 731-772-5183 sign up. Still not too late to get your ticket for the Friends of
the NRA banquet June 10. Just since its inception in 2008, the Haywood County
Young Guns Shooting Team has received over $13,000 in grants as a direct
benefit of these fundraiser banquets. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased
in advance. Call Mark Kendrick (731-772-9304), Doug Taylor (731-780-3694) or
Jerry Rogers (731-780-0055) to get your tickets. Oh, did I mention all the
prize drawings and the auction that will also be held. While I’m on the subject, I’ll remind you about the 2010
Youth Fishing Rodeo Saturday, June 5 on the Hatchie’s Goose Lake. It’s open
to kids ages 4-12 and sponsored by TWRA and the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge.
Registration is at 7:30 a.m. Contact the Refuge office at 731-772-0501 for
directions and more information. Another fishing rodeo is coming up on June 12 at Oneal
Lake. The 6th Annual JCIL/VA Fishing Rodeo will be 8 a.m. until
noon. You can fish or volunteer to help with this one, but they need your
response by Friday, June 4. Contact Phillip Merrell at 731-668-2211. June 12
is also Free Fishing Day in Tennessee. If you were around the court square yesterday, you
already know that early voting has started. Now through June 10, city
residents can vote for their mayoral candidate and for alderman if you live
in Ward 2 and 4. If you are a registered voter, I encourage you to vote in
this and the county election in August. It’s almost time for 4-H camp. If your kids are grade
4-6th, the time is now to sign up. Deadline is June 4. More
details below. The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center will be open on
Memorial Day, so come out and visit with me and enjoy a free glass of
lemonade. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, June 19, when “Southern Gospel
meets Country Spiritual” on the porch of Sleepy John’s house. This will be a
free concert by Brownsville’s own David Smith and Jackson’s George Parchman.
It will be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to picnic on the grounds.
Show starts at 6 p.m. On last word to the wise about this weekend. Stay safe and do not drink and drive. The Brownsville Police Department and the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department are teaming up and conducting Sobriety Checkpoints Friday night from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m., Saturday. They will not only be stopping drunk and impaired drivers, they also will be checking for seat belt usage and proper child restraints. Again, stay safe and have a great Memorial Day weekend. ~ Sonia Join the Conversation: AAB Blog |
