The Haywood County Master Gardeners are once again sponsoring the popular Hatchie Fall Fest Scarecrow Contest. Last year 18 participated in the contest that served as the official start to the festival week and many more are expected this year.
Poised against the backdrop of the Haywood County Courthouse, participants will begin displaying their works of art Saturday, October 14, with judging at 5 p.m. Scarecrows will remain on the courthouse lawn as a reminder, and an invitation, to join the fun at the festival, Oct. 21.
The contest is free and open to all age groups. Judging will be in two categories; children and adults, with cash prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each. New this year is the “Most Creative” and the “People’s Choice” awards.
Popular vote will determine the “People’s Choice” award recipient. Each scarecrow will be numbered and information will be provided directing festivalgoers to voting precincts where you will be able to vote for your favorite scarecrow. Voting will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Oct. 21, during the Hatchie Fall Fest, and the winner will be announced at 5 p.m., from the main stage area.
Groups and organizations are encouraged to participate, as well as school classes and individuals. Scarecrows can be made of any natural materials, but cannot depict an actual person.
