A sight you don’t see everyday in Brownsville, at least not anymore. Tommy Lynn and his family greeted the THC in 19th century attire at the Hutchinson-Elkins-Lynn home, circa 1867

Tennessee Historical Commission tours Brownsville

The Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) officially began its visit to Brownsville Thursday afternoon, June 16, 2006. Commission members, their spouses and friends, gathered at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center and were welcomed by Chamber Director Joe Ing. The last time the THC visited Brownsville was 1993.

After leaving the Heritage Center, members traveled to the Hutchinson–Elkins–Lynn Home on North Church Street where Tommy Lynn, owner and restorer, greeted them. Lynn and his family were dressed in 19th Century attire, appropriate for the circa 1867 home.

The commission enjoyed refreshments at the home of Joe and Susan Sills. The Sills live in the Baptist Female College’s President’s home on West Main.

Other tour stops included Temple Adas Israel, Christ Episcopal Church, Golden Circle Life Insurance Company and the Haywood County Museum. Commission members were also treated to a driving tour of several streets in the historic district while Ray Dixon and Carolyn Freeman rode along and shared the areas rich history.

A reception and dinner in honor of the Tennessee Historical Commission was held Thursday evening at Lilie’s, also known as the Eader-Walker-Tubb Home.

The Commission will meet Friday morning at 9 a.m. for their summer meeting. The public is invited to attend.

The THC, along with spouses and friends, enjoy a tour of Temple Adas Israel Thursday afternoon. Fred Silverstein tells a little about the Temple before the visitors go inside.
