Volume 2, Issue 17

Wow! Lucy has been adopted. Thank you. I know she has found a good home.

For those of you who were not able to attend “Music for a Spring Afternoon” last Sunday, you missed a marvelous performance. Drs. David and Pam Dennis filled the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church with some very powerful melodies. They are such a talented couple and I know the Wednesday Morning Musicale is so glad to have them as members. And I am glad to have heard them perform. It was perfect music for a spring afternoon.

Speaking of spring, I don’t mind the rain and we certainly needed some spring showers, but my hostas could have done without the shredding provided Tuesday night during the hail storm. Of course, there are many who would have been happy for the storms this month to have only damaged their flowers. I was glad to know that the latest weather events did not claim any lives. Maybe May will be a little less threatening.

Saturday, April 29

SYS Cheerleader Sign-ups

SYS Cheerleader sign-ups are going on now at the Courthouse on Saturdays. Sign-ups will continue every Saturday from 9-noon, through May 27. Ages range from kindergarten to 9th grade. These girls will cheer in the fall for the youth football teams. A recent picture and a copy of their report card are required for registration. Squads are determined by grades, this is why report cards are required. They will not need to see the grades. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Firmin, 217-1410, or Jackie Coburn, 772-5763.

Crawfish Boil to benefit Carl Perkins Center

The Annual Crawfish Boil will be held at the Brownsville Country Club Saturday, April 29. Happy hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner and music by The Grove to follow. All proceeds benefit the Carl Perkins Center. Call 731-772-8378, for more information.

Benefit for Devin Hart

There will be a benefit for Devin Hart at “The Store” in the Tibbs Community Saturday, April 29. Devin is a 29-year-old who has found out he has bone and prostate cancer. Stew will be available for purchase, and you can also participate in a cakewalk and an auction. Haywood County’s own Mickey Utley will perform at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, May 2

Toddler Time at the Library

Toddler time at the Elma Ross Public Library begins at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 2. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddlers and enjoy lots of stories, songs, puppets, crafts and a snack.

Senior Circle goes Wild

Well, at least as wild as they will allow at the Memphis Zoo. Join the Haywood Park Community Hospital Senior Circle Tuesday, May 2, and be a kid again. Contact Jackie Collins, 772-8475, for more details.

Wednesday, May 3

A&B Grand Opening

Join A&B Printing for its Grand Opening at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 3 at its new location, 50 South Washington. A&B is really three stores in one. Along with meeting all your printing needs, it is an appliance center and a UPS shipping store. A&B is also the only place in town, that I know of, where you can get color copies. Mr. Doyle Burroughs is a familiar face to many and has been in the printing business for many years. Drop in and welcome him back to the court square and meet Kristy and Matt while you’re there.

Thursday, May 4

National Day of Prayer

The first Thursday of May is recognized as a National Day of Prayer. In observance of this, the public is invited to gather on the courthouse lawn at 12:10 p.m., Thursday, to participate in a county-wide prayer service. Learn more about the National Day of Prayer and this year’s theme.

Yard Sale to benefit Mexico Missions

God’s Man in Texas

God’s Man in Texas is a play about the changing of ministers in the nation’s largest Southern Baptist Church. It is a work of fiction, but rooted in the truth that the succession of a leader of an organization – especially a mega church – rarely goes smoothly. With amiable humor and great respect, the play brings to light issues common to any corporate or religious environment – power struggles, different styles of leadership and the reluctance to retire. To learn how to get your tickets and more about this play presented by the Brownsville Haywood County Arts Council on Saturday evening, May 6, click here.

News/Brag on Brownsville

Shellabarger and Sullivan Honored

Congratulations to local Extension Agents Tiffany Shellabarger and Tracey Sullivan. Each was recently recognized for outstanding work in their respective fields. Epsilon Sigma Phi Early Career (ESP) honored Shellabarger for her youth financial planning programs. The program, “On My Own,” is a real-world simulation that teaches money management. Shellabarger is the county’s 4-H leader and conducts the financial planning program each year. The Tennessee Association of Agricultural Agents and Specialist (TAAAS) honored Sullivan for her contributions as the county’s agriculture agent. Sullivan also received recognition for her fact sheet, “Soybean Rust,” which was declared a state winner for Extension communications.

A Special Evening “On the Town”

The 2006 “On the Town” fundraiser for the YMCA is well underway. One event is already sold out and others will be soon. Get your ticket to one or more of these special evenings “on the town.” Call the YMCA, 772-9748, and make reservations, now. The first event is a gourmet dinner on May 13, followed by a Hatchie Bottom supper, Hawaiian luau, a 50s-style evening, afternoon tea and much more. Your entire ticket cost goes to the local “Y,” so make plans to enjoy these very special events and support your Brownsville YMCA. The welcome mat will be out all over town!

Save those Toilet Paper Rolls

Ever wonder what to do with those empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls? Well, wonder no more. The Elma Ross Public Library is collecting craft supplies for its summer reading program and what is needed most are empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls. Summer reading program sign-ups will start soon, so keep an eye out for more information from your child’s school or ask about the program when you take the empty rolls by the library. This year’s theme is “Jungle Tales.”

Local Merchants offering Special Deals

Just in time for Teacher Appreciation, Mother’s Day and Graduation, local retailers have put together a special booklet filled with promotions for May. It seems we all, at some time or another, have a little problem choosing gifts. These merchants are helping take some of the guesswork out of gift-giving by offering special prices and coupons (some coupons worth up to 50% off) and we also get to take advantage of their expert advice when we visit their stores. Look here for participating retailers and then go by to get your free booklet. There is no reason why we shouldn’t “shop at home” when we have such great selection and service.

Pet Spotlight:

Roscoe is a “lucky dog.” He was recently rescued from the street and has been living with his new poodle friends, Prissy and Egor. But there’s just not enough room for Roscoe to live here, too. Calvin has spent several months at the shelter and is now looking for a more permanent residence. [Learn More]
