You will notice as you read through the calendar below
that the spring sports season is upon us. Beginning the first Saturday in
February, you will be able to sign-up your children for Dixie Youth Baseball
and for SYS Track. Dixie Youth Baseball Commissioner Mike Coburn tells me
there are major changes to the Dixie Youth program this year. Changes like
“fixing our parks, adding clinics for players and coaches and some new rules
for the older kids,” according to Coburn. Tommy Naylor will be serving as
Coburn’s assistant this year. There is also a mandatory coaches meeting for
Dixie Youth at the Chamber of Commerce building, 121 West Main, this Tuesday
night at 7 p.m. If you are interested in Dixie Youth and in coaching a team,
please plan to be at this meeting. And keep reading All About Brownsville for
more about Dixie Youth baseball as the season progresses. |

Out of School Youth Program
If you or someone you know is having a hard time finding
or keeping a job and are between the ages of 18 and 21, the Workforce
Investment Act (WIA) has a program that may be able to help. WIA’s Job
Readiness Program prepares participants with work attainment and work
retention skills. After completing 60 hours in this program, participants
receive a certificate and $100. WIA also helps people prepare for the GED and
once attained, pays $150. Another $100 is available to those who find a job
and work for 60 calendar days. There are eligibility and enrollment
requirements. For more information contact Daniel Thornton at 780-1641. The
WIA Out of School Youth Program is located at 140 South Wilson (use the West
Tennessee Career Center door and walk straight back).

Williams inducted into UW Hall of Fame
George Williams of Haywood County was
among several inducted into the United Way Hall of Fame Tuesday night,
January 24, 2006 at a ceremony held at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Tenn.
The honor was given to those who have been instrumental in the United Way effort.
Williams was recognized for his part in laying the groundwork for United Way
in Haywood County. Congratulations, Mr. George!
Two businesses to hold Ribbon Cuttings
Two local businesses have special celebrations planned
in February. First South Bank will dedicate its new Brownsville East Branch,
1519 East Main Street, at 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 7, with a ribbon cutting
ceremony. Sugar Palace etc. will celebrate its new location on the court
square with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 8. The public is
invited to both events.
Haywood Park Progressive Care Unit
Haywood Park Community Hospital will host an open house
and tour of its new Progressive Care Unit at noon, Monday, February 13.
Progressive Care is a 4-bed unit, similar to a step down unit in bigger
hospitals. The patients will be monitored 24/7 and there will be a much lower
nurse/patient ratio. The most a nurse will handle is 4 patients. This unit
will eliminate the need for patients to be transferred to a larger hospital and
will also allow for the personalized care that Haywood Park is so well known
for. This will be great for families and friends who will not have to travel
to Jackson or Memphis and for the patient who will likely know the person
taking care of them.
