Volume 3, Issue 44

Congratulations to this year’s Chamber of Commerce award winners: Man of the Year – Carlton Veirs; Woman of the Year – Emma Delk; Educator of the Year – Rhonda Thompson; Business/Industry of the Year – Teknor Apex/Haywood Company; and Ambassador of the Year – Jo Anne Finn. These are all very deserving people and dedicate a tremendous amount of time and energy into making our community the best it can be.

I also want to say thanks for naming me Volunteer of the Year. It is a great honor and I appreciate it very much. Thank you!

And speaking of volunteering, I’ve just learned that the Carl Perkins Center is in need of “Santas.” If you can help sponsor Christmas for a child who otherwise would not have one, please call the center, 772-8378. I understand there are 19 who have not been sponsored. These children are not hard to please and after reading some of their wish lists you realize simple things mean so much to these children. Please call the center and let Linda and Sue Ellyn help you pick a child. You don’t have to do everything, but every little bit means so much.

If you are a business owner in Haywood County, get ready for “Brownsville Lights.” That’s the theme of this year’s Business Christmas Lighting Contest. Entry forms are available here or at the Gardner Building on the Court Square. There are cash prizes for the winners and judging will begin the night of the Christmas Parade December 1. “Brownsville Lights” is sponsored by the Brownsville Business Association, but you don’t have to be a member to enter. I hope all businesses will enter this contest and help our community “glow” for the holiday season.

Don’t forget to put your candles in your windows at home. Remember when every home in Haywood County displayed the welcoming glow of the single white candle in each window? It hasn’t been that long ago and it’s time to bring this long-time tradition back.
