Volume 3, Issue 35

Grandparent’s Day is Sunday, September 9, and since this is a holiday that doesn’t seem to get much publicity and seeing how I am a grandparent, I thought it would be interesting to find out just how it got started. I was surprised to learn that Grandparent’s Day has been celebrated since 1978 and always the first Sunday after Labor Day. If you are interested, here’s a little history and census data about Grandparent’s Day.

Haywood Movement may have gotten off to a slow start in August but the excitement for the September 15 event is growing everyday. Already several businesses and groups have committed to being at the event. I hope you will make your plans to be there, too. Here’s a list of businesses and/or groups who plan to be there, so far.

Haywood County Reading Railroad will kick-off its Fall Enrollment Drive by sponsoring “StoryTime on the Courthouse Lawn” Saturday, September 15, plus they will have children’s books available for sale for $2. There are approximately 400 eligible children in Haywood County right now who are not participating in this program. Let’s help Reading Railroad find these children. If you have a child or know someone who has a child, under 5 years of age, please make sure they are signed-up to receive their free book each month.
