Congratulations to our newly elected School Board
members. If you haven’t heard the local election results, Daniel Thornton is
the new representative for Districts 2 & 6; and Allen Currie will
represent Districts 4 & 10. Also, congratulations to Dare Simpson who
retains her position as Property Assessor. Labor Day is coming up soon and if you haven’t made
plans think about staying at home, inviting some friends over and enjoying a
Boston Butt. The Exchange Club is selling hickory-smoked Boston Butts ($30)
now until Friday, August 22, for pick-up on August 29 – just in time for
Labor Day. Place your order by calling the Chamber at 772-2193. Two great Ribbon Cuttings lately. Pat’s Fabrics &
Collectibles on July 15 and Rayz Tanning & Boutique August 6. Both are
great businesses and invite everyone to come by and see their new stores and
take advantage of some special deals. Check out Pat’s and Rayz, and all the other
local merchants on the Local Coupon page. The March of Dimes WalkAmerica is now March for Babies
and this year you are invited to take part in a new event to help raise money
for this worthy cause. “Breakfast for Babies” will be held Thursday, August
21, from 6-10 a.m. at RJ’s Hibachi. Make plans to have breakfast and be
served by “celebrity” waiters and waitresses, enjoy music from local talents,
win door prizes and giveaways. You’ll also get a chance to meet Anna Evans.
Anna is the 2008 Haywood County Ambassador for the March of Dimes and the
daughter of Kelvin and Karol Evans. All tips and a portion of the breakfast
proceed will go to the March for Babies campaign. It’s not too late to get your tickets to the Annual
Steak N’ Burger Dinner Thursday evening. Former NBA star and U of M Tiger
Elliot Perry is the guest speaker. Proceeds will benefit the Brownsville Unit

Dance Class Registration for girls 3 & up The Martin Dance Studio, located in the WOW
building, will be conducting registration for fall semester dance classes for
girls on Friday, August 8, from 2-7 p.m. Sign-ups will take place at the
W.O.W. Building on Boyd Avenue, across from the Parks and Recreation
Department. Classes begin August 15. For more information, call 731-642-5465,

Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation will be held Friday, August 8, at
the College Hill Center, 127 Grand Ave. Member registration and dinner begins
at 6 p.m., the business meeting begins at 7, followed by entertainment and
drawing for door prizes. Renewed Gospel Ministries will perform and over 50
door prizes will be given away. Dinner includes free hotdogs, chips drinks,
pies and ice cream. |

Learn how to contract with
local, state and federal government The Tennessee
Small Business Development Center and the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber
of Commerce will host a free seminar on August 13, from 9 a.m. until noon in
the Chamber conference room to teach businesses how to contract with local,
state and federal governments. If you are interested, please call the chamber
to reserve your seat – 772-2193. Space is limited and seminar will be filled
on a first come basis. |

Steak & Burger DinnerThe Brownsville Unit of the Boys & Girls Club will welcome former NBA star, and U of M Tiger player, Elliot Perry during its annual Steak & Burger Dinner Thursday, August 14, at 6 p.m. The dinner seats tables of eight, six members of the community with two kids from the Club, giving the community an opportunity to meet the children and see first hand the work and results of the programs offered by the Boys & Girls Club. Tables and individual tickets are available by calling 772-0552. |

Give BloodGive blood when the Lifeline Bloodmobile visits Brownsville Friday, August 15, from noon until 6 p.m. The Bloodmobile will be on the court square. All donors receive a cool t-shirt. Remember to bring a photo ID. |

Miss Brownsville Belle PageantBoys
and girls ages 0-3 yrs and girls up to age 21 can compete for honors during
the Miss Brownsville Belle Pageant to be held Saturday, August 16, at the Ann
marks Performing Arts Center. Entry fee is $40 and includes Best Hair, Best
Dressed, Best Smile, Best Personality, Best model and Most Photogenic. Attire
is formal or Sunday best. Trophies and crowns will be awarded. Entries will
be taken at the door. This pageant is a prelim to the 2009 West TN Strawberry

Toddler Time at the Library
Toddler time at the Elma Ross Public Library will be Mondays, August 18, at 11 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddlers and enjoy lots of stories, songs, puppets, crafts and a snack. |

Brownsville Business AssociationThe Brownsville Business Association will conduct its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 19, at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will be a business meeting and plans for the upcoming holiday season will be discussed. All members are urged to attend. Everyone is welcome. The meeting will be held at the Delta Room, 703 East Main St., behind Backyard Barbecue. |
