You
know, I really wanted to talk about Lil’ Abner, Sadie Hawkins Day and Leap
Year, but I’ve decided to spare you my commentary on the subject. But I will
admit that I have been to Dogpatch USA and didn’t realize until I started
researching that it had shut down in the 1990s. I guess not too many young
folks are interested in hillbillies, or as the website says, Dogpatch’s
heyday was before the era of “political correctness.” I did learn that Sadie
Hawkins Day was originally in November and not on Feb. 29, as I had
previously thought. Oh well, I still offer fair warning to all unwed males,
there may still be a few Sadie Hawkins around today. And while you’re leaping
about this morning– leap over to Insouth Bank between 8-10 a.m., for
breakfast. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life. Now,
back to Brownsville and Haywood County. I think I’ll unofficially declare
March as “50s Month.” Smokey Joe’s Café is sure to be a blast next Saturday
night at College Hill. It’s one of the longest running musical in Broadway
history and will showcase the best hits of the 50s. I’ve heard nothing but
rave reviews for this production. Tickets available at Livingston’s, Insouth
Bank and at the door. And
the fun continues as the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center’s Annual Dinner
and Auction takes place on Saturday, March 15. This year’s theme … The
Fabulous Fifties! Call the center for tickets, 731-772-8378. I
guess you would consider Horticulturist Carol Reese more of a 60s Flower
Child, but I’m sure during her appearance March 13 at College Hill, she will
share some new and fun ways to use tried and true plants from all eras. This
is a free event sponsored by UT Extension and the Haywood County Master Gardeners.
Don’t miss this one. On
a more serious note, mark your calendar right now for next Tuesday night,
March 4, at 7 p.m., Mayor Franklin Smith is inviting anyone and everyone to
come for a “town hall meeting” to be held at the Marks Performing Arts Center
at College Hill. You will be given an opportunity to discuss whatever is on
your mind. A few years ago, Mayor Smith sponsored a similar event that was
very well received. Discussions were open and frank and I don’t know anyone
who walked away from that meeting without a better understanding of who we
are as Haywood Countians. Please, if you do not attend any other event,
attend this one. It benefits all who come and it gives everyone, even little
guys like me, an opportunity to express views and visions of what our county
can be. ~ Sonia Share your upcoming 2008 events |
