I’m excited about school starting this year and I’m not even a part
of it. Well, actually I am a part of it, and so are you. Whether we have
children, grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, or no one at all, our
support is an instrumental part of the success of our system. I am so glad I
decided to attend the State of the School Celebration yesterday because the
excitement in the HHS gym was contagious. Director of Schools Marlon King is
a dynamic speaker and the guest speaker, Dr. Montrell Greene, literally had
everyone on their feet. We have many new teachers who have chosen to make
Brownsville and Haywood County their home, to teach in our system, and we
also have a good number of resident teachers who have chosen to come back
home to teach. That’s really great news. And, as president of the Brownsville
Business Association, I was also excited to see over 30 of our local
businesses set up and showing their support. And while I can’t sing you a
song (you had to have been there), I can say THANK YOU! Thank you to the
educators, the support staff and the businesses who know how important our
young people are to the future of our community. I was also fortunate to spend this past Saturday morning in Stanton
attending the graduation of Stanton Academy. At this ceremony, it was all
about pride. Twenty young men and women beamed with it as they walked up to
accept their certificates. Stanton Academy is not your standard academic
school. Here it’s more about life and learning some of the essentials that
make it a little easier to navigate, like balancing a checkbook, how to
handle yourself at a job interview, how to speak clearly and how to give a
firm handshake. And mainly it’s about building self confidence and learning
that nothing is impossible. There is no doubt that these students learned
valuable life lessons during their summer classes. If you still need school supplies don’t forget to take advantage of
the tax-free holiday this weekend. Tuesday night’s National Night Out was a huge success with a great
crowd. Congratulations to Carolyn Flagg, Barry Diebold and everyone who
helped organize the event. Former HHS basketball star Jarvis Varnado will be the guest speaker
at this year’s Boys & Girls Club Steak and Burger Dinner August 29. Call
the Club, 731-772-0552, to reserve your table now! The local chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual membership
banquet and auction Thursday. See below for details. Also coming up is the
West Tennessee Chapter of Friends of the NRA annual membership banquet August
27. See the AAB August Calendar for more details. Two people have announced their intention to run for Mayor of
Brownsville, John Ashworth and Jo Matherne. Now, you know I don’t get
political here, but I am interested to know what qualities you think our next
mayor should have and what direction you believe our city needs to move in.
Visit the AAB BLOG and let’s talk about it. One of our biggest events of the year happens tomorrow night – RELAY
FOR LIFE. Join us on the football field for food, fun and entertainment and
don’t forget the Bust the Bus school supply drive. This
morning, take advantage of the Relay Bake Sale at Haywood Park Community
Hospital (details below). ~ Sonia Join the Conversation: AAB Blog If you have an event coming up that isn’t listed on the Calendar, e-mail details to sonia@outlawdesignmarketing.com. |
