The Christmas Basket Fund is up to $35,000 thanks to URS
Construction Company. Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Cates had no idea
when she contacted the TVA Plant and URS Construction Company to donate to
this year’s basket drive that their generosity would result in about 100 more
Haywood County families having a merrier Christmas this year. Last Thursday
Mike Renfroe, with URS, contacted Nancy and asked her to come out to the
plant. “He told me they exceeded their goal of $4,000, but would not tell me
how much,” says Nancy. She and County Mayor Franklin Smith rode out to the
construction site and were greeted with a grand total of $10,500. The company
contributed $2,000 and the rest was given by the 900 employees. Nancy says
she almost fainted when she heard the total. It has certainly been the talk
of the town and our own little Christmas miracle. A great big thank you to
all those employees and URS. So you know what that means - even more volunteers are
needed to help deliver the 400 plus baskets. Volunteers are asked to meet at
the Brownsville Utility warehouse on South Dupree at 8 a.m. this Saturday,
December 19. Some other good news shared by Nancy is that the planned
Skate Park has recently received another $30,000 in grant money. This brings
the total received for the skate park to $144,190. Brownsville now has a new ENT doctor who will begin
seeing patients on December 28. Dr. Rande Lazar will be in Brownsville on the
second and fourth Mondays and his office will be located in the Specialty
Clinic, 2555 North Washington, Suite 1, behind Haywood Park Hospital. You can
call 901-821-4300 for an appointment. The Brownsville Police Department announced their
efforts to crackdown on holiday drunk driving this week. Drunk Driving, Over
the Limit, Under Arrest efforts began on the 16th and will
continue through into January. More info … If you’re like me and still have Christmas shopping to do, I hope
you plan to look locally for the perfect gift. And while the kids are out of
school, think about taking them out to the West Tennessee Delta Heritage
Center and introduce them to the Element Man. He was created locally in 1997
from some very interesting materials. Learn more about The Element Man. This is your last All About Brownsville for the year. I’ll be
spending the Christmas break working on updating the website and setting up
the community calendar for next year. Please go ahead and e-mail me (sonia@outlawdesignmarketing.com) those 2010 events that are
already planned. Merry Christmas to you and Happy New Year, too. See you again in
2010! ~ Sonia Join the
