All About Brownsville

Volume 5, Issue 6

I sometimes get requests from people who have found All About Brownsville while doing internet research. About a year ago I received an e-mail from David Lubin, originally form Chicago but living in Mexico. Mr. Lubin told me he and a photographer from Sweden came here in the early 60s to make a film. He remembered staying with a “large African–American family on a farm … they had a gospel group with their kids.” He also met Sleepy John Estes. I forwarded him some contact info of people that I thought could help him find the name of this family and honestly, I had forgotten about it. I was pleasantly surprised this week when John Ashworth called to tell me he had been in touch with Lubin all this time and that they have planned a special event for the community. I have since talked to Lubin again and am looking forward to meeting him and hearing more about his adventures in Brownsville. The exhibit and presentation by Lubin is planned for Saturday, Feb. 21, at Carver. I will have more details next week, but please go ahead and make a note of this on your calendar. I promise this will be a very interesting, and educational, event. Here’s a short bio about Lubin and a brief description of his trip.

Another event you’ll want to go ahead and mark on your calendar is a book signing by Scott Pearson. Pearson is a Haywood County native and his debut novel “Rupture,” the first in a series, has just been released. He will be signing copies Sunday, February 15, from 2-4 p.m., at College Hill. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

I also had the pleasure this week to meet Mike Chouinard. Chouinard is the Hatchie Wildlife Refuge Manager. He has been here just over a year and after talking to him briefly Monday evening, I am excited about his ideas and hopes for the future of our refuge. There is a public meeting planned for Thursday, February 12, to discuss proposed recreational changes at the refuge and an opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas about the refuge. Learn more about the meeting …

They are available to fund “educational, cultural, scientific and literary projects.”  Deadline to apply is February 17. Get your application here … or at the Chamber office, 121 West Main.
