The Dunbar-Carver National Alumni have a whole day of events planned
during David Lubin’s visit to Brownsville. I told you about Lubin last week.
He and a photographer friend spent time in Brownsville during the early 60s.
They had intended to make a movie about the migration of African-Americans
from the south to Chicago, but the film was never finished due to lack of
funding. The trip undoubtedly made a lasting impression on Lubin and after
much research he was able to secure those old photos and will be in
Brownsville on the 21st to share them with us. The community
awareness event will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 21, and Lubin’s
presentation will start at 10 a.m., at the Carver gymnasium. If you can’t
make it for nothing else, I hope you will come hear Lubin talk and share his
experiences of our community. Here is a complete schedule for
the day. You should take full advantage of all the great Valentine’s Day
events planned in Brownsville this year. Here are the two I know about and
I’m sure there are plenty more. The Brownsville Country Club is having a
special dinner/dance and the Haywood County Relay for Life team will host
their 2nd Annual Valentine’s Banquet. Details are in the calendar
below. There’s no reason anyone has to go out of town to celebrate this year.
And don’t forget local merchants are offering some “sweet” deals on a whole
array of very unique gifts this year. Shop around, but shop local! Make it a Valentine’s weekend and take your sweetheart to the book
signing at College Hill on Sunday. Haywood County native Scott Pearson, now a
successful doctor in Nashville, will sign copies of his first novel,
“Rupture,” Sunday, February 15, from 2-4 p.m. Pearson grew up in the Forked Deer community and “Rupture”
is the first in a series of books Pearson is working on. The book cover makes
it look very interesting and it will be available for purchase at the event. More about Pearson and a look at
the cover. Deadline for getting one of the Portrait Packages ($9.95) from Lasco
is February 25. Learn more here or call 731-779-1832 for more
details. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life. It was brought to my attention last week that some are having
trouble opening links in the newsletter. I think I have resolved that issue,
but anytime you experience a problem, please let me know. Happy Valentine’s Day! ~ Sonia Join the Conversation: AAB Blog List your Community Event here! |
