Volume 5, Issue 3

The 2009 Relay for Life campaign kicks-off this morning. If you get this message before 7:30 a.m., go on out to the hospital for the ceremony and a light breakfast. Then mark your calendar for this year’s event – June 12. Mrs. Carolyn Flagg has graciously agreed to take the helm for one more year, so expect to hear some exciting plans throughout the year. Keep up with the campaign at: www.relayforlife.org/haywood.

“Operation Round-up” begins this month. Brownsville Utility’s new program gives us an opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of our neighbors by “rounding-up” our utility bills to the next dollar. According to BUD General Manager Regie Castellaw, that means on average about 50 cents more per customer, which would amount to about $1000 - $2000 a month. The extra money goes to The Mustard Seed to help those who need assistance with their utilities. BUD does all the work, and all I have to do is pay a few cents extra each month. Which really means that once a month I will forgo that extra shot of espresso (in my hot caramel latte from the Sonic) to help a neighbor. A sacrifice I think I can live with. Plus, with utility rates dropping some, I don’t really sacrifice anything and if I’m conservative in my use of energy, I may even save a little. That’s what they call a win-win, right? It’s a very worthwhile, affordable way to help each other. I hope you choose to participate, too.

Dynametal and Lowe’s have made generous contributions to this year’s United Way campaign. Lowe’s Distribution Center and their employees donated just over $2,300 and Dynametal’s employee campaign returned $6,778. A great start to this year’s campaign. Read more.

Don’t forget about the new Master Gardener classes beginning Thursday, and if you’ve been wondering what a Hospitalist is, you can stop by the hospital lobby Thursday at 5 to learn more.
