All About Brownsville

& Haywood County

January 23, 2009

Volume 5, Issue 4

Are you a UT or UofM alumni? If so, and you’re a basketball fan, you should consider joining the big TV party to watch the game this Saturday. More details are below or call Jo Matherne, 779-1117, for more information.

“Preventing Burglaries – How to Protect Your Home” is the subject of the January 29, District 6 Neighborhood Watch meeting. Everyone is invited. With all the break-ins recently, this is something I’m sure we all want to know more about. The meeting starts at 7 p.m., at Bluff Creek Baptist Church on Dr. Hess Road.

I learned this week that Curves of Brownsville is moving to a new location, 317 West Main Street, effective February 1. If you are participating in the free weight management class, you’ll want to make note of that for the Feb. 14 class.

UT Extension is offering a free tax preparation class for families who earned less than $42,000 in 2008. The class is offered on Tuesday afternoons, 1-4 p.m., through Feb. 24. Also coming up is "Dining with Diabetes." UT offers this program yearly and has proved invaluable to those with diabetes or those who care for diabetics. Classes will meet from 3-5 p.m., on Thursday afternoons in February at the Haywood Park Community Hospital dining room. Classes are free but size is limited so you must pre-register. Call 731-772-2861 for more information about both programs.

Lots of stuff going on this week, but it will not be complete until you attend “Brownsville Homecoming II” Saturday night at the Ann Marks Theater. Some of Brownsville’s best talents will be back on stage, under the direction of Richard Dickerson and Jennifer Simmons Milligan, for an evening of gospel singing. Tickets are $12.50 per adult and $5 per student, and available at Livingston's, Insouth Bank and the Arts Council office.

“Survival Tips for Small Business” is the subject of an upcoming seminar on Feb. 5. The class is co-sponsored by the Tennessee Small Business Development Centers, Brownsville Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and the Brownsville Business Association. There is no cost and it will be offered twice that day, noon and 5:30 p.m., giving everyone an opportunity to attend. If you are in business or thinking about starting one, contact the chamber to reserve your seat, 731-772-2893.

Lots going on to finish out the last week of the first month of the year. Check the calendar regularly for additions and be sure to check out all the activities already planned for February, too.
