My mind is still on gardening, mainly the fact that it has been too
wet to do much. But there have been a few windows of opportunity when Steve
and I were able to get more planted in our vegetable garden. During this
week’s brief dry spell I actually got to walk through it without burying up
to my knees in mud. A few weeks ago when I planted watermelons it was so
muddy that you can still see my big foot imprints throughout the patch. Now, I have a new objective – pumpkins. The Master Gardeners have decided to sponsor a Pumpkin Contest at this year’s Hatchie Fall Fest and, although as a Master Gardener I am not eligible to compete, I still want to try my hand at it. My daddy has grown pumpkins many times, so I’ll be anxious to see how my pumpkins compare with the ones he has grown and also how they compare with those entered in the contest. But I better really hurry if I expect them to be ready in time. I’ll have more details about the contest at a later date, but I hear there are cash prizes. Perhaps you can grow the biggest pumpkin in Haywood County. Wanna give it a try?
Who doesn’t like barbecue on the 4th of July? The
Exchange Club is selling Boston Butts that will be ready for pick up in time
for the 4th. Cost is $30 each and can be ordered now through June
26 by contacting any Exchange Club member or calling the Chamber at
731-772-2193. The butts are 8 pounds and will be ready for pick-up July 2
from 5-6 p.m. at the WOW building parking lot. All proceeds will benefit the
Carl Perkins Child Abuse Prevention Center in Haywood County. Lots of exciting things happening with businesses around town.
Discount Tobacco and More is celebrating 10 years today. Lytle Computers is
having a Grand-Re-opening and Ribbon Cutting this week and so is Rayz Tanning
Salon & Boutique. Check out these businesses and congratulate them. Then,
be sure to shop locally every chance you can. If you look around, I think
you’ll find there’s a lot more available locally than you might have thought.
