& Haywood County November 12, 2009 Volume
5, Issue 42 |
|
It's here! The 2nd Annual Holiday in Haywood starts tomorrow. Over 20 retail merchants will be set-up inside the Wyatt-Duke National Guard Armory. Admission is free. Doors open Friday morning at 11 a.m. Food will be available all three days. I hope you've made that gift-giving list already. And Santa will be there Saturday from 10-2. Bring the kids for pictures. All proceeds will benefit the Carl Perkins Center. Very special Veteran's Day ceremony at the courthouse
yesterday. The local VFW Post 4838 and the DAR sponsored the event. Ray Dixon
served as host and recognized veterans of all conflicts, plus local public
servants and those currently serving in the military. Col. Jeff Taylor was
the guest speaker and did a great job. What an honor for us that he would
come back home to speak on such an occasion. Col. Brad Bishop also did a
great job and I’m glad that he is back safe and sound from his second tour in
Iraq. Brownsville and Haywood County still have several who are serving
in the Middle East and others who are slated to leave within the next month
of so. Please continue to remember all the men and women in your prayers. The Scholastic Book Fair starts Monday at the high school.
Everyone is invited. Lots of great books to choose from and some gift items
will be available, too. Details below. Thinking of giving family photos for Christmas this
year, or just haven’t had one made in a while? The Lasco Relay for Life team
is selling gift certificates for your choice of several family portrait
specials. For $9.95, you can choose from an 8x10 family portrait or 2 8x10, 4
5x7 and 16 wallet of Puttin’ on the Ritz Kids Portraits (age 3 mos. – 10
years). All of the $9.95 goes to the American Cancer Society. Deadline for
purchasing a gift certificate is November 25. Call Vicki Williams, 779-1800,
or Joy Williams, 779-1853, for more details. Last year the local Carl Perkins Center was able to
provide 125 children with Christmas. Children who would have otherwise gone
without. The center was able to do this with your sponsorships of a child or
family. And this year it is anticipated that even more will need our help. If
you or your group can sponsor a child, please contact the center at 731-772-8378.
They will provide you with a wish list and all the information you’ll need to
help make a child’s Christmas wish come true. Tuesday is the Arts Council’s presentation of The
‘Nutcracker.' Tickets are $12.50 for adults and students get in for $6. There
will be two special performances for the students at Haywood Elementary
during the day and the evening performance is at 7 p.m. Since it is a school
night, the performance will be 60 minutes. Get your tickets at Livingston’s
or Insouth. There will also be tickets available at the door. More details
below. The local Community Thanksgiving Service is planned for
Tuesday, November 24, 7 p.m., at First United Methodist Church. Proceeds from
the offering that night will go to the Mustard Seed. ~ Sonia Join the
