Volume 6, Issue 26

When I miss a week there just seems to be so much catching up to do. But I really enjoyed visiting some of my West Tennessee tourism partners and learning more about their attractions and visitors.

I guess the biggest news this week is that our new mayor, Jo Matherne, has taken office. She and Aldermen Carolyn Flagg and Tom Averyheart were sworn in at the City Board meeting Tuesday night. Carolyn Flagg was also voted as vice-mayor by her fellow aldermen. I have to admit it was my first time to be at a city meeting when a new mayor was being sworn in and I was amazed at the crowd. That was the fullest I have ever seen City Hall. A good sign of the support for this new administration.

I want to personally convey my thanks to Mayor Webb Banks, Vice Mayor Joe Taylor and Economic & Community Development Director Anne Banks for their dedication and many contributions to Brownsville. You will be missed and I wish you the very best in whatever the future has in store. It has been a pleasure working with you.

It's so hard to believe that it's time to begin thinking about school starting. The second annual State of the School Celebration will be held Wednesday, August 4, at Haywood High School. Businesses who are interested in participating in the business fair should call 731-772-9613, ext.224 or e-mail garretta2@k12tn.net. The celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.

There was a really big crowd on the courthouse lawn Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the HHS Special Olympics Basketball Team. They will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to participate in the National Olympic.

City election is over and county election is coming up. We're all familiar with Rotary Pancake Day during our national election in November and this year they will also treat us to 'Lunch on the Square' during our County General Election August 5. Cost is $5 for a hamburger lunch and tickets are available from any Rotary member.

Hope for Haywood Disaster Recovery Services is really beginning to get underway and we are looking for people who are interested in being Volunteer Disaster Relief Case Managers. If this is something you might be interested in, please call Emma Covington at 731-772-6062 to learn more.

If you are a golfer, you'll want to pay special attention to the first item on the calendar! You'll also notice that a couple of events have changed dates. Kid's Day, which was to be held yesterday, has been moved to next Thursday, July 22. Also, last week's Health Awareness Conference has been moved to this coming Monday.
