This Week in Brownsville and Haywood County!

All About Brownsville, is a weekly e-newsletter dedicated to keeping you in the know about Brownsville and Haywood County, Tennessee.

December 9, 2010                                                       Volume 6, Issue 44

As always Haywood County comes through with another successful Christmas Basket Fundraiser. Last I heard, the count was around $27,000. Many families will have a better Christmas this year thanks to your generosity. If you'd like to volunteer to help deliver and witness first hand the gratefulness of the recipients, gather at the utility department warehouse on South Dupree Saturday, December 18, at 8 a.m.

But we're not through yet, the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse still has children who need your help. Call the center, 731-772-8378, to help fill a child's wish list or make a donation and a staff person will do the shopping for you.

Congratulations to the Haywood County Rescue Squad on another successful Christmas Parade. A new addition to this year's event was a Children's Parade and it was wonderful. I can see this growing.

Fourteen local businesses participated in Holiday Open House this past weekend and it was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who is shopping locally this year. Some businesses are also remaining open late on Thursday nights to make it more convenient for you. Two I know of are All That's Victoria and Merle Norman-Traditions Gifts. Imagine the economic impact if we all spent a little bit more at home.

You can still honor and remember friends and family with a donation to the Habitat for Humanity Holiday Store. Each donation will contribute to the next Habitat home in the following ways; $10 buys a box of nails, $25 a gallon of paint, $50 two bundles of shingles, $75 an interior door and $100 a window. Habitat will acknowledge your gift to your loved one. See a Habitat Board member for more details.

Don't forget this Saturday is Operation Medicine Bottle. Gather up your outdated and unused prescription drugs and bring to the WOW building this Saturday so that they can be properly disposed of. More details in the calendar below.

Another bit of good news for Brownsville. The city was one of 12 downtowns chosen for the Tennessee Downtown program. This is an improvement program for cities and counties who want to revitalize their traditional commercial districts. I'm sure we will be hearing lots more about this in the coming months.
